Cobham Village Hall was the venue for our Spring Concert on April 12th. A fantastic selection of music was played including Sinatra in Concert, The Way We Were and Singing In The Rain. There was a packed audience and great entertainment, including a few jokes from the musical director! Students from University of Surrey attended to record the event as part of their Sound Recording course and the stage had many microphones to capture all the different brass sections. Money was raised during the evening, some of which will go to our nominated charities and some to band funds.
The band returned to the Menuhin Hall in Cobham for the annual Autumn Concert on the 16th of November, led by new Musical Director Glenn Hayter. The event started with Tannhauser (march) and included Singing In The Rain (musical), Viennese Nights (waltz) and Sinatra In Concert (selection).
The guest soloist for the evening was Gareth Bimson on trumpet. Gareth is principal trumpet player for the BBC Symphony Orchestra and played a number of solos during the event, including Virtuosity.
The bandsman of the year was awarded to Beryl McMillan, who was presented with the Bob Todd Cornet – this is an ornately decorated cornet that is estimated to be over 100 years old, presented in an beautiful oak case that contains an engraving for each member who has received it.
The band played near the bandstand (the bandstand is very ornate but far too small to fit a full brass band!) in John Innes Park in Merton on the 29th of June. This park was the garden of a nearby Manor House and it was bequethed to the people of Merton by John Innes, whose horicultural institute went on to develop a range of composts.
There was a very good sized audience who came with picnics to enjoy the annual “Music in the Park” event. Solos included Beryl McMillan playing Concerto de Arenjuez on Flugel and Jeff Bamber playing The Power of Love on Horn. Trombones featured in The Bold Gendarmes and front row cornets featured in Buglars Holiday. The band was led by Marc Edwards as our Musical Director was unable to attend this engagment. The weather was a complete contrast to our previous engagement – warm and sunny!
