The band played at the Cobham Village Hall on Saturday 12th May, with a Spring Concert featuring music from America and Europe.

17 pieces of music were played covering a wide variety of styles including marches, fanfares, contest pieces, musicals, films and a quintet. Amongst the pieces played were a selection from West Side Story, Braveheart, Kenilworth, Amparita Roca and Music. There were also a few of the almost obligatory bad jokes from the Conductor!

Two of the band’s new Timpani (partly purchased with generous support from R C Sherriff Trust) were played for the first time at a concert and featured particularly in Braveheart.

The three prize cups that the band has recently won were on display at the front of the stage.

The band recently gave a donation of over £500 to our nominated charity, The Princess Alice Hospice, based in Esher, Surrey. The hospice provides patient care free of charge to the local area and also provides support for the families and friends of the patients. The donation comes from a proportion of the money raised at our Christmas Carolling and Christmas Concert.

In addition to a raffle at the concert, this year we had a ‘Pick a Carol’ vote - members of the public were asked to vote for their favourite carol by donating money; the carols with the most votes were played.

Each year the band selects a local charity to support at the AGM.

A Christmas Concert was also performed, held at the Village Hall in Cobham. Amongst the music played were Sleigh Ride, A Christmas Festival and Sleep.

The band collected money while playing at the events and a proportion of it will be given to the Princess Alice Hospice, the charity that the band is supporting in 2011.

One of the bands percussionists, Julie Beaven, played an unusual instrument – the Hammered Dulcimer. The origins of this instrument are said to date back over 2000 years and it is a forerunner of the modern piano. Julie played a solo in Braveheart and an composition of Some Enchanted Evening. It is believed that this is the first time this instrument has been played in collaboration with a brass band.
