Hail Sea Songs!

The Cobham Band went from ‘Caesar’ to ‘Sea Songs’ on Saturday 12th September as they helped both Walton and Cobham celebrate National Heritage Day.

Starting in Walton the band played by the Thames as Caesar sailed past on a canal barge, the Byfleet Boat Club splendidly presenting the roman theme of the day by dressing up themselves and their boats.

A few hours to let the brass players’ lips rest and then the band were back in action in St Andrew’s Church, Cobham playing Sir Henry Wood’s ‘Fantasia on British Seasongs’ for Cobham’s first ‘Last Night of the Proms’ concert.  Soprano Alice Bishop sang beautifully as the guest soloist and also lead the sell-out audience in the traditional rousing numbers ‘Jerusalem’ and ‘Land of Hope Glory’.

Brass bands are the epitome of our national heritage and with Cobham’s very own brass band ‘Last Night of the Proms’ a new tradition for Cobham has begun.
